'When the Going Get's Tough' An Astrological Look Forward to 2010

Having had enough of the fear-mongering that surrounds the year 2012, I decided to have a look at what the up-coming year, 2010, has in store for us from an Astrological point of view.

I'm a bit of a cynic these days. I believe people can pretty much find anything they like in an Astrology Chart. It's a bit like poetry. There's only so much objective information available. The rest is totally up to what the reader wants to make of it.

But I still like to read poetry and find my own meaning from it, and so I still like to look at a Chart and see what I can learn from it.

For the uninitiated, there are many different forms of Astrology and many different charts that can be drawn. An Astrological Chart is a picture of the heavens captured in symbolic form at a particular moment in time and space. Most people know about Horoscopes- that is a Natal Chart- a picture of the heavens at the moment a child is born in a particular place. But there are many others.

I chose to create a Natal Chart for the birth of the New Year, as it happens at Greenwich Mean Time. This is the starting point for a 24 hour day, as measured around the world.

So what do the heavens portend for the birth of 2010?

The first thing that jumped out at me was the Moon in its own sign of Cancer on the Midheaven. This indicates that the Feminine Principal- the nurturing mother- will come into prominence in 2010. And of course the greatest symbol of nurturing is the planet itself-Gaia. So I predict that issues to do with Planetary concerns like ecology, will be at the forefront of our minds.

But I also think that there will be a mother figure who will step forward to bring humanity's focus back onto the role of the mother. Another Mother Theresa possibly?

The next thing to jump out at me is Saturn on the Ascendant. This leads me to think that the recession will continue into 2010. Everyone will be tightening their belts. Discipline and hard work will replace the current mindset of the easy, instant-gratification life-style. Fear-mongering will spread. (Damn, and I was looking for some good news!)

It's always good to look at how the historical pendulum swings. There are economically good times and bad times. And with these swings people's perceptions of life and themselves swing too. You can greet the news of continued hardship with fear and trepidation, taking it personally as a reflection of your failure, or you can take up my motto for the New Year: 'When the times get tough, the tough get going!'

Even with times being hard, there will be much fun, of an escapist kind, to be had. My thoughts immediately go to the Film and TV Industry.

So, while we're tightening our belts, we're still paying out for the latest blockbuster or video game to take us away from the harshness of reality. And magic and mystery will continue to fascinate us, too!

The last thing that jumps out at me is our Karmic direction. This is humanity's destiny, if you will. What we are trying to learn as a culture at this time.

To find this out I look at the moon's north node, which is in Capricorn in the Fourth House in 2010's birth chart. I look at the Sabian Symbol for the exact degree of the node too. In this case it's the 22nd degree of Capricorn.

Cut to the chase? (jargon can be annoying)

Here we have a repeat of the two earlier messages I've identified around Saturn and the Moon. The node in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, the hard-work, fears and restrictions guy, in the house of the home, ruled by the Moon- the nurturing principal again.

When you see patterns repeating themselves in a Chart you can be pretty sure that what the pattern is saying is going to manifest in a major way.

And the Sabian Symbol? It reads as 'By Accepting Defeat gracefully, a general reveals nobility of character... (ie) The realization that one may grow through defeat as well as, and perhaps more than, through success... INNER STRENGTH' (quoted from Dane Rudyar's An Astrological Mandala)

So my plans for the coming year? Batten down the hatches, prepare for a lot of hard-work, focus on nurturing and caring for others and the planet, and get ready to grow through adversity (while indulging in a little escapist entertainment to balance the load).

I think I might start with the last first by having a really fun New Year's Eve. Anyone going to join me?

Berlin - The Capitol of the Modern World

The impressive Berlin can not be described in only a few pages. The German capital can display much more than what a tourist may experience in one or even two weeks of vacation. To have a somewhat appropriate idea about Berlin, it is enough to say that it has a surface of roughly 900 square kilometers, it receives 850.000 visitors per year and accommodates 172 museums and palaces, 50 theaters, over 200 clubs and discotheques, 3 zoos, tens of lakes, beaches, parks, art galleries, operas and malls.

From a touristic point of view, Berlin is the fantasy of any person who has a desire for traveling. This capital is the European metropolis with the richest history but also with the most impressive return. The city, traumatized after the Second World War, tragically affected by the Berlin Wall and the split administration, finds itself for 18 years in a Gargantuan process of renewal, reinvention and reconstruction. Today, the capital of Germany represents one of the most essential world centers of fun, music, tolerance, culture, art and tourism.

In Berlin you can find everything you need in order to enjoy the supreme vacation. The two rivers that cross the city (Spree and Havel) also form a pleasant collection of small lakes which were transformed by the local administration into quiet beaches. Over the River Spree there are a lot of terraces and bars, restaurants and clubs. Ships and all types of boats are scheduled regularly, therefore constituting a solid delight for amateur tourists. The opportunities of inspecting the city are extremely fascinating. You can appeal to the simplest method: along with a good guide you can start examining the city on foot. But you may also choose other options. In Berlin there are grouped tours of the city. Because Berlin has hundreds of miles of bike lanes, my particular recommendation would be to take a two-wheeled tour of the city. A boat ride - with the help of a tour guide - could be another possible alternative.

Sights of Berlin must be sorted according to choices. Therefore, a comprehensive documentation before departure is recommended. However, one thing is sure - no matter what type of vacation you choose - whether is cultural, artistic, for relaxation, for fun or mixed - you have all the chances in the world to spend some of the most pleasing and fascinating days here.

There are limitless attractions that you should see while visiting Berlin. This capital has over 170 museums and palaces, more than enough for an art lover. The Museuminsel is the most relevant museum complex in Germany (found on the UNESCO World Heritage List) - it hosts 5 separate museums, visited every year by more than 800.000 tourists.

The Pergamom Museum is Berlin's most visited museum, mostly due to the fact that it hosts 3 excellent art collections - the Antique Collection, the East Museum and the Islamic Art Collection.

Checkpoint Charlie is the most satisfactory place for those trying to bring to light some of Berlin's hidden history. Here you will see photo exhibitions, movies and you will be able to take part in unique meetings between those who were witnesses or those who played an crucial role in the shatter of the Berlin Wall.

The History Museum is hosted inside an immense but entertaining palace, built in a Baroque style. Zeughaus was initially built in 1695, by the order of Frederick III. Up until the beginning of the 20th century it served as an Arsenal and a Military Museum. In the Second World War, the palace was almost totally destroyed by bombings. It was rebuilt and since 1990 it hosts permanent art and history exhibitions.

The Charlottenburg Palace was engineered at the end of the 17th century by Frederick III, as a summer residence for his wife, Sophie Charlotte. The palace, opened for public six days per week, astonishes the tourists with its greatness and its ornaments. It deserves to be visited and you should have at least several hours to spare if you want to see all that it has to offer.

The Egyptian Museum is one of the most acclaimed museums with this thematic in the entire world. Here you can find the remarkable bust of Nefertiti, 3000 years old, as well as the Papyrus Collection which includes hundreds of ancient Egyptian elements.

New York Has a Lot More to Offer Than Shopping

New York is one of the top cities in the world and it attracts about 45 million visitors each year. Many come for the shopping and the entertainment venues, but there is also a lot more to do in the city. Why not try one of these more adventurous activities in the city.

How about seeing the city by bicycle? There is just no better way to get a feel for the city then travelling around it on a bicycle. Bike the Big Apple organizes tours all over New York and you will get to see all the diverse neighborhoods. You will see parts of the city that are just not available to those going on other types of tour. There are plenty of bike paths around the city so you will be able to travel safely. This really is a unique opportunity and it will also ensure that you stay physically in shape while you are in the city. Tours are available for half days and full days.

The Top of the Rock has an observation tower that will blow your mind with a spectacular view of New York. This is as high as the Empire State Building and the observation room is created in the design of a cruise liner deck. You can find the Top of the Rock at the GE Building.

Ellis Island is where most immigrants arrived in America until it stopped operating in 1954. If you have relatives who moved to the States prior to this time then this is where they would have arrived. The island is now a museum and it can be quite moving to see the place where a new life for so many people began. Those who arrived at this location had often travelled for weeks and left desperate living conditions back in their home countries. Twelve million people passed through Ellis Island on their way to a new life.

A different way of seeing New York is by air-tour. You can take an airplane or helicopter and really get to appreciate the sky-scrappers. A really memorable way of taking the journey is by hot air balloon.

How about seeing the city from the sea? The New York Beast speedboat ride will give you a huge adrenalin rush as you experience the city.

If you loved the Sopranos or Sex in the City then you can take a tour that will bring you to all the New York Locations that feature in these award winning TV shows.

Greenwood Cemetery might seem like a bit of a dreary place to visit but when you get there you will find that it really is a beautiful location where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The above is just a selection of the more adventurous things you can do in New York. There is a lot more than this on offer and new things are available each day.

Creating an Extraordinary Organization

Is this condition inevitable? Are we destined to an environment where the most we have to look forward to is Friday afternoon? Not at all. There are specific steps that can betaken to begin to reclaim some of the enthusiasm, some of the air of celebration and some of the fundamental respect for individual human dignity that is apparent within flourishing business organizations or on championship teams:

1. Don't take it personally

Given the dysfunctional communication strategies demonstrated by most adults, repressed anger and upset are frequently brewing just beneath the surface within many individuals. Their angry and offensive outbursts have little or nothing to do with any occurrence in the present moment. Some unresolved upset from the past has simply been triggered and bursts forth in an inappropriate manner.

Under such circumstances does it make sense to take another's outburst personally? Logically, the answer is no. Taking someone else's anger personally is insane because it simply never is a personal phenomenon. This is not to say, however, that it is easy tore main calm in the face of another persons' anger, recognizing that it is not personal. It is never easy, but armed with this insight you can begin to develop an ability to stand firmly in the face of another's upset without taking it as a personal attack.

2. Listen with compassion

Life is a difficult and challenging enterprise for everyone, and this fundamental truth goes largely unrecognized. Given this knowledge, rather than reacting to someone's anger or upset, it is possible for you to deeply appreciate his or her feelings and experience. Rather than reacting to someone's anger or upset, it is useful and necessary for you to demonstrate empathy. Remember, there but for the grace of God go I.

3. Just hear the communication

In order to lessen tension within the workplace, it is necessary to provide a safe environment for open, honest communication. Get people to talk about what is going on with them, to describe their present experience, and then just listen. Don't respond. Don't offer advice. Don't try to console. Just listen with compassion and understanding. In the vast number of cases, quiet and attentive listening will allow the upset to disappear.

4. Give up the need to be right

For most human beings, the necessity to be right, the unconscious desire to win is all important. This drive is expressed with employees, coworkers and even with family. Individuals are reduced to objects, and friends and family are sacrificed simply to preserve an egocentric point of view. We would rather be right, would rather win the argument than coexist happily, but being right and being happy are mutually exclusive.

5. Look for the best in people

Attention on oneself caused by one's own sense of insufficiency drives people into competition with one another and creates a bias toward critical, negative analysis of another in order to enhance one's own social standing and appearance. We literally look for the worst in others in an attempt to conceal or dilute our own self-perceived shortcomings by comparison.

In order to counter this seemingly natural tendency, learn to look for and expect the best in all coworkers and become everyone else's greatest fan. What is it about each individual that makes him or her a valuable contribution to the company? Who are these people really, and what are their best attributes and strengths?

6. Acknowledge people

Everyone craves positive attention, for most individuals live with a sense of insufficiency and of their own shortcomings. Look for opportunities to acknowledge coworkers. What positive impact are they making on the company? Acknowledge people for doing a good job, for making a deadline, for keeping their promises. Acknowledge them for their appearance, for the way they manage their workload, or for the way they treat others. Always remember to keep it authentic and sincere, and look for and find numerous opportunities to thank people for the many large and small contributions that they make to the company.

7. For give others

Given the unconscious desire to win at all costs and the necessity to be right, we tend to hold on to every injustice, every wrong, every resentment and every regret. What often goes unnoticed is that un-forgiven resentments must always be suppressed, managed or controlled. They arise again and again whenever the person who is the object of the resentment comes into the room or is mentioned in conversation. What makes matters worse is that the suppressed anger also arises whenever any similar instance resembles a past transgression. Resentments divert attention, breed gossip and provoke physical illness.

For your own sanity, it is critically important to forgive others. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself. Forgiveness does not deny the inappropriate nature of another's acts; it does not condone or tolerate future abuse, but in forgiveness, in giving up the resentment and the right to punish, you are left with serenity, freedom and peace of mind.

8. Communicate upsets

Human beings live in the illusion that unexpressed anger, upset and disappointment will simply disappear over time. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like resentments, unexpressed upsets inevitably arise again and again. They divert your attention and sap energy. Moreover, unfulfilled expectations, thwarted intentions and undelivered communications - the stuff of which upsets are made - provide the evidence by which other individuals are tried and sentenced. Only communication can provide salvation for continued viable and productive relationships.

Do You Always Achieve Your Daily Goals? If Not, Learn Four Reasons Why You So Often Fail Short

Whatever your profession, or daily routine is; whatever your level of seniority, planning your work-day is an essential part of being as effective and productive as you possibly can be. However, daily plans are rarely completed in their entirety, necessitating either the need to extend your working hours into the evening or weekend, thus eating into your "quality time". Alternatively, you could carry forward the uncompleted tasks to the following day, which means that that day's planned tasks get more squeezed. It's a vicious circle. Set out below are four reasons why things don't get done as planned, along with suggestions of how to avoid falling into the traps they set.

1) Detestation

If you just hate doing a particular task, for any reason it is common to put it off, and off, and off, always finding something you enjoy doing to do instead. It does not matter why you hate doing something. Perhaps you find it too difficult, perhaps you find it boring. There are a multitude of reasons people hate doing particular things. However you have to be an adult and realize that everything needs to get done in the end.

Get the least enjoyable jobs done with and out of the way first. There are two advantages of taking this course of action. Firstly, while you are completing the least enjoyable tasks, you can look forward to relaxing a bit later in the day while you are completing the jobs you enjoy doing more. Secondly, while doing the more enjoyable tasks you can breathe a sigh of relief that that you have got those you detest doing out of the way early.

2) Over Optimism

When you set your mental or written daily plan it is very important to be realistic. Things are always going to take longer than you expect, you are going to get distracted by one thing or another. Leave gaps in your schedule for tea breaks, loo breaks, time to make or return telephone calls, answer or write emails, and a myriad of other things. If you complete all of your allotted tasks, go home, or leave your at-home office happy. If you have completed your list, never stop work thinking that you could have achieved more.

3) Taking Too Long

Often people take more time than they should to perform a particular task. This leaves less time for jobs that have to be performed later. Your mental or written plan should include an approximate time frame for each task. Buy a cheap kitchen timer for your desk and each time you start a new job, set it to ring five minutes before the end of the time you have allotted to the task. This will give you time to complete the task after the bell has rung.

The main reason for taking too long is distraction. Try not to get distracted so you can concentrate solely on the task at hand. If you are disturbed by telephone calls that are not directly relevant to what you are currently doing, be polite but tell the caller that you are currently busy and will call back shortly. Take a quick note to remind you to call back, and a number if necessary. Use one of the time spots mentioned under point 2 to make the call. Other common causes for distractions are office gossip and the ever present, ever tempting computer games.

4) Get Enough Sleep And Eat Breakfast

Following a demanding daily work plan takes a lot of concentration and hard work all day long. Concentration and hard work all day long requires a lot of energy. To fill your body with enough energy to enable you to complete your requirements, it is essential to get enough sleep and to eat a hearty cooked breakfast. Even if you work from home, a good breakfast is important to give you the energy that is required to put in a full, productive day's work.
