In late January, CBS premieres the new series Under the Dome, based upon the novel by Stephen King. King is no stranger to adaptation, having seen several of his books translated to film, and Under the Dome is the first TV series to be based on a King book, either. Some hit and some missed, but one can argue all King-based movies, miniseries, and TV shows have been memorable.

Books have provided Hollywood with countless ideas long before King was born, and the smaller screen has hosted a number of figures born from pages - everybody from Sherlock Holmes to Jeeves and Wooster to Sookie Stackhouse. These days you can tune in to Justified (based on Elmore Leonard's Pronto), George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones or Jeff Lindsay's Dexter. Mystery and sci-fi books tend to see adaptation most often, but what about romance and books with romantic elements?

Of course, there are the many made-for-TV movies based upon books by Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, and other authors that have filled time slots at Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel. What about series, though? In my search for a good example, I've found if anything comes closes it's typically a book or series geared toward younger readers. Pretty Little Liars airs currently airs on ABC Family, and Gossip Girl (based on Cecily Von Ziegesar's books) recently finished a lengthy run on the CW Network. Not all adaptations prove as popular as the books, however. Candace Bushnell's Lipstick Jungle and Gabriella Pierce's 666 Park Avenue did not last long on the small screen.

Since I spend more time reading than watching television, I'm sure I'm missing a series or two. Do you have a favorite TV show based on a book or series?
