Do You Always Achieve Your Daily Goals? If Not, Learn Four Reasons Why You So Often Fail Short

Whatever your profession, or daily routine is; whatever your level of seniority, planning your work-day is an essential part of being as effective and productive as you possibly can be. However, daily plans are rarely completed in their entirety, necessitating either the need to extend your working hours into the evening or weekend, thus eating into your "quality time". Alternatively, you could carry forward the uncompleted tasks to the following day, which means that that day's planned tasks get more squeezed. It's a vicious circle. Set out below are four reasons why things don't get done as planned, along with suggestions of how to avoid falling into the traps they set.

1) Detestation

If you just hate doing a particular task, for any reason it is common to put it off, and off, and off, always finding something you enjoy doing to do instead. It does not matter why you hate doing something. Perhaps you find it too difficult, perhaps you find it boring. There are a multitude of reasons people hate doing particular things. However you have to be an adult and realize that everything needs to get done in the end.

Get the least enjoyable jobs done with and out of the way first. There are two advantages of taking this course of action. Firstly, while you are completing the least enjoyable tasks, you can look forward to relaxing a bit later in the day while you are completing the jobs you enjoy doing more. Secondly, while doing the more enjoyable tasks you can breathe a sigh of relief that that you have got those you detest doing out of the way early.

2) Over Optimism

When you set your mental or written daily plan it is very important to be realistic. Things are always going to take longer than you expect, you are going to get distracted by one thing or another. Leave gaps in your schedule for tea breaks, loo breaks, time to make or return telephone calls, answer or write emails, and a myriad of other things. If you complete all of your allotted tasks, go home, or leave your at-home office happy. If you have completed your list, never stop work thinking that you could have achieved more.

3) Taking Too Long

Often people take more time than they should to perform a particular task. This leaves less time for jobs that have to be performed later. Your mental or written plan should include an approximate time frame for each task. Buy a cheap kitchen timer for your desk and each time you start a new job, set it to ring five minutes before the end of the time you have allotted to the task. This will give you time to complete the task after the bell has rung.

The main reason for taking too long is distraction. Try not to get distracted so you can concentrate solely on the task at hand. If you are disturbed by telephone calls that are not directly relevant to what you are currently doing, be polite but tell the caller that you are currently busy and will call back shortly. Take a quick note to remind you to call back, and a number if necessary. Use one of the time spots mentioned under point 2 to make the call. Other common causes for distractions are office gossip and the ever present, ever tempting computer games.

4) Get Enough Sleep And Eat Breakfast

Following a demanding daily work plan takes a lot of concentration and hard work all day long. Concentration and hard work all day long requires a lot of energy. To fill your body with enough energy to enable you to complete your requirements, it is essential to get enough sleep and to eat a hearty cooked breakfast. Even if you work from home, a good breakfast is important to give you the energy that is required to put in a full, productive day's work.

Self-Modeling: M.O.T.H.E.R (Molding Others to Handle Every Responsibility)

Self-Modeling is a concept that connects our behavior to our understanding of who we are or what we represent. What we say, do and see is modeled by the beliefs we have about ourselves (our perception). What we do, see, and say is related to what we know and believe about ourselves (internally and externally). Mother (Woman) is the source, measure and manifestation of a people's level of spiritual, moral and intellectual development. Not only is Mother our 1st teacher, her thinking shapes and molds our view of ourselves and everything around us. The (woman) is the Mother of Civilization.

Sister's we are powerfully blessed, naturally anointed and appointed. Our nature is godly and we must strive to stay cultivated and be utilized. Being godly is an active concept. Women are always working, moving, producing, creating, and doing something. Be empowered! We must not give time or energy to believing something about ourselves that is not true. We are certainly powerful! We must grow beyond the state of belief and enter the world of certainty. This is a place of knowing (our true self) opposed to thinking we know. It is a knowing coming from Spirit and it Super-cedes our minds. What is a model? A model is a physical representation of an object or a replica. What is a designer? A designer is a creator of an object or one who creates the structural properties of the design.

Who are we modeling? Who are we representing today?

We ALL are modeling our God design. We constantly influence others in some way, whether we like it or not. In order to successfully Self-Model our God design; we must focus on our internal processes.

Why?

We must have the knowledge of Self. The knowledge of self is akin to the knowledge of God. Knowledge of Self is essential to Self-Modeling. We innately house God in all of us. God resides within the spiritual house in the Kingdom of heaven that is within us. We must KNOW that within us resides God. Our journey is about uncovering or truly reuniting with our GOD SELF. We are modeling our GOD selves. The World is our Runway.

To Model Our God Self, our Minds must be attuned to the thinking of God!

Attuned means adjusted or altered to accommodate to certain requirements or bring into a proper relation. Becoming fully aware of the Christ Consciousness in us, helps us know that all the limiting patterns that prevents us from living to our highest awareness and knowledge must be brought to the light and can be brought down.

What are the limiting patterns?

The limiting patterns exist in our Thinking. This world has a thought pattern that can limit our ability to reach our full potential. We have a tendency to Model what we THINK is true about ourselves. Believing it to be TRUE, when in fact, we lack the True Knowledge of who we are. We are so Valuable!

Remember as a child, the story "Jungle Book". This story was animated but highlighted a human being raised by animals. In the story, this child believes that he is (like those who raised him). He is modeling his understanding of himself. Acting and believing it to be TRUE. The real truth was that he is a human being, absent of the knowledge of self. Again, what we believe tends to determine what we create. (Ex: Gangster, Thugs). Changes in consciousness always go before changes in the body.

3 Molding Techniques to Self-Model God

1) Desire (Awareness)

We must desire to Model God. This is having the natural urge or desire to know HIM. To know that which is greater (God). When we desire to know God, we seek ways to gain a stronger faith and knowledge of him. This is done through Acts of Devotion (Worship through Praise, Studying the Word, Charity, and Prayer to name a few).

Question: What do a woman who believes she can do anything and a woman who believes that she cannot do anything have in common? They are both correct! If you believe you can do anything, you can, and if you believe you cannot do anything, you cannot. Remember our brain does not differentiate between what we are doing and what we THINK we are doing. If you desire to model God, you can be successful!

2) Willingness (What we See)

Seeing a thing the way God sees things gives our life purpose. We must SEE ourselves the way God sees us. We are powerful, worthy and valuable! People may have defined us outside of how God has defined us. We must be willing to look at TRUTH. The truth of who we are. We are ALL borne with a purpose to serve. Serve who? We must serve God and others. Others can mean; a different person, opposite, people aside from oneself. This requires faith and faith requires movement or action steps. Do you remember hearing that "Faith without works is Dead" We must surrender our negative thoughts about things and move toward the things that we were gifted in. When we are truly able to see ourselves correctly, and others, we will also become aware of the awesome gifts from God that exist at our fingertips!

3) Model Talk (What we Say)

When modeling our God Self, we must speak like we are representing God.The spiritual gates of the tongue and the ear gate are interconnected. Everything to be avoided in speech must also be avoided in hearing. Everything to be avoided in hearing is to be avoided in speech. We must be Sheriffs over our Ears and the Ears of our children! Revelation contains the highest form of electrical energy and opens us up to growth and development on the mental and spiritual plane. When we know God, we can be used as an Instrument of Revelation. Why is this important to know? The more we converse with one another on a higher level of communication; we give energy to one another. When our conversation degenerates - the energy leaves. Gossip, slander, and backbiting strip us of our energy. Sisters, we are plagued by this low language almost everywhere we go, on television, internet, friends, co-workers and more. We can become completely drained of our energy and sanity, if we become partakers in it. We must become aware of those who bring this type of language to our ears and sheriff over what we hear.

Conclusion

Mother (women) has the power to mold others to handle every responsibility. The Power lies in Mother whose thinking and feelings, defines molds and shapes our character. Today, we have been given things to model that kills our self-esteem and has a negative influence on us. Thereby, producing an effect on who WE are molding and shaping with OUR thoughts. Once our minds begin to change and realign to its original state, there is nothing we can not accomplish. In order for us to survive and flourish, it is imperative that we are attuned to the thinking of God. If we think like God we will experience a Godly existence, regardless of circumstances.

We must always strive to gain control of our thoughts through constant submission, constant obedience, constant study and vigilant prayer to produce constant growth. That is how we stay centered. When we do this we can understand that every event or circumstance is designed to propel us into further spiritual growth and development.

Turning A Girl On Using Text Messages

Listen Up

Listen to her. Read what she is texting you. There's nothing sexier than a guy who actually listens to a girl. Most guys get so caught up with what they plan to say to a girl. Or even how great she is. We get distracted and we forget to listen to what she's actually saying. I know that feeling. It happens to me all the time. Sometimes I feel like I need a dose of Addrerall before I listen to my girlfriend's conversations. It's almost like she keeps blabbing on and on about nothing. But if you try really, really hard, you'll find that she's actually saying something. She's usually talking about her problems or some gossip she heard about someone. Try to keep up. Even if the topic is boring. Even if you're not into drama. Fake it till you make it. Just don't let her know you're not that interested. If all else fails, try talking about something you BOTH might be interested in talking about. Like the lingerie bowl. Don't we all wish we had a girl like that?

Caring (Show Emotions)

Make sure she knows you care. Using emotional works like "CRAZY" or "UNBELIEVABLE" is a good way to show that you care about she's saying. Console her when she's feeling down. That's what separates an acquaintance from a friend and a friend from a boyfriend. The fact that you care. But you have to keep it sexy. Tell her you wish you were there to give her a "hug". This turns girls on. It lets them know that you have a heart and that you're there for them. Show them that you're that guy that can be there for them when they're sad, depressed, mad, lonely. It's things like that, that turn a friendship into something more.

Attractive Compliments

Try an attractive compliment. Don't just tell her she's amazing. Chances are, she already knows that. Tell her why she's amazing. Do it in a subtle way, without actually telling her directly. A few years ago, I used to date an artist. I actually didn't know she had a hidden desire and talent to draw super heroes. She's been doing it since she was 9 years old. I found out when I texted her:

"I have a sneaking suspicion that you're an in-the-closet creative nerd. What secret talent do you possess."

It's not the easiest thing to do, but if you get it right, you're way ahead of the game. Most guys FAIL at this miserably. You can check out more examples of attractive, flirty compliments on page 119-131 of our best selling ebook and video course. Get this right and it's gonna give you an amazing edge you never thought you had.

Escalate the conversation. Make it sexy. Tease her. Some guys are afraid that teasing a girl will make her lose attraction for you. Quite the opposite. Teasing a girl creates a challenge. It makes the girl think that you're not as into her as you thought you were. It creates doubt and a little confusion. She'll be drawn to this challenge and she'll look for a way to hook you in again. That's why the text above is so perfect. It teases her in an attractive way, calling her a "creative" nerd. Whenever I send this kind of text to a girl I like I always get responses that indicate she's trying to make herself seem non-nerdy or normal. Never fails.

Take It To The Next Level

Setup a date. Make her look forward to something... with you! It's one of the best ways to turn a girl on over text. Show her you're not afraid to take things further. Show her you're gonna lead the way. Ask her out. Even if it's just for a walk in the park, a visit to the zoo or a quiet dinner. Do it.

Twitter And How It Contributes To A World-Wide Conversation

The Twitter social media platform was only started in 2006 and for a while, many people thought it was just a trend, and a strange trend at that. There were probably many people in society, possibly even those who were using it, who thought that it would fade quickly. However, despite what people expected, Twitter has just continued to grow and is still a growing force in today's society. It is hard to find exact numbers of how many people are users. This is partly because people can use Twitter without having an account. Also, some people might be signed up to read tweets and do very little posting of their own. However, this year it is estimated that there are approximately 500 million active Twitter users and they send an average of about 340 million tweets daily.

Twitter can be used for any number of things, and this is perhaps part of why it became and still is so popular. Although the limit of 140 characters does not allow much in the way of lengthy discourse, with abbreviations (many of which have become popular in other social media situations), pictures, video, and short links, sharing is not actually that difficult. If you have a blog post on a personal or business blog discussing at great length a new product, an idea, or even stuffed full with vacation videos, one tweet to your followers will send them there.

And really, with clever utilization of your words, a surprisingly lot can be said in that 140 characters. When news is breaking all over the world, both good and bad, Twitter users spread the news the fastest. News organizations of all stripes count on followers to tell them about natural disasters, political upheaval, rebellions, and battles. Celebrities use Twitter to keep their fans appraised of their opinions about daily gossip, their tour schedules, and sometimes things as mundane as where they are eating dinner that night. Businesses gather Twitter followers to alert them about sales or as a good conduit for sending out coupons and newsletters. Even the non-famous can alert their friends and family to funny sayings of their children, daily doings in their lives, and the fun and frustrations of everyday living.

It is hard to know whether the Twitter popularity trend with hit a zenith and then start to decrease. Just as with all social media, it is sometimes very difficult to predict what will become popular and what will lose its luster because there has never been anything like this in the history of mankind. But whatever happens down the road, at this point, at least, Twitter continues to change the world.

God Vs Science: Or Atheists' Biggest Mistake

I am not pro-any-religion or pro-atheist. No way. I am always pro-Truth. I love Gandhi's words that there is no God above Truth. Actually if God is, the words "God" and "Truth" must be synonyms.

I admire seekers of any kind who honestly look for the Truth trying to understand the essence of what God is and what to live for. At the same time I feel sad seeing well-educated scholars with multiple regalia reject logic itself in their attacks against God.

First of all, let's separate God as a singular absolute entity from religions and from any kind of spiritual scripts that described God from various perspectives. God and descriptions of God are different things.

If you are dissatisfied with interpretations of your religion, this approach simply would help you to understand what exactly you oppose: God as an absolute mysterious Creator of the universe or the religious interpretations of God that you have been fed?

It's normal that many of those interpretations now look illogical for a person who has been raised in a society where science is an unquestionable authority. However it doesn't mean that those "illogical" interpretations don't have any sense at all.

The problem with many atheists is that they confuse the basics: interpretations of God with the essence of God. This is similar to when people consume endless gossip about a celebrity and form their opinion of this celebrity based on those half-true stories. People might like or dislike the image of this celebrity, but often they don't realize that this image is not an actual person. Even more, this image can be very far from the truth of a real character of that human being.

Who is God from this perspective? Celebrity number one.

Who has been writing about and teaching of Him? Those who believe that they have personally experienced God in their life. For thousands of years these messengers have been channeling dazzling gems of information about our Creator.

Should we question their words? Sure, why not? It's a normal scientific approach to question everything. However, questioning doesn't mean mocking those who shared with the world their understanding of Truth.

How accurate is their information? It depends on how you look at it. For folks that lived thousands of years ago that information was accurate or logical enough to understand the basic ideas of creation like: This world is not chaotic; it's a dual reality that has order; it was intentionally created, not in a moment but through time.

Think for a moment: How would it be possible to deliver the idea of evolution as eternal development to a person who has no clue of science?

The only way to do this would be through a parable or a simple myth that describes the process of creation through several time stages, called days. For instance, this myth of creation was a genius introduction of the latest modern ideas of the world as an ultimate system that has inner logic, balance and cycles.

Let's remember that science is a bunch of knowledge of reality, which reflects the current development of human society. Two hundred years ago science barely existed. If to transfer modern science back even just five hundred years, it would be totally irrelevant for the people who lived those times.

In the same way, ancient religious stories are illogical for us when they are taken literally and transferred from that reality into the modern world of precise systems and formulas.

The life of any system in this magnificent universe is a process of growing, whether we're referring to that of a child or the whole human civilization, and every stage of development requires a different interpretation about what we are, what God is, what is right and what is wrong.

The point is to distinguish our interpretations from the actual laws and approach to any existing opinion with logic, honesty and an open mind.

When we do this, we come to the astonishing conclusion that we live in the reality of System Matrix where God is Absolute Logic, which at the level of feelings, we perceive as love. That's the moment when the divine mystery of the Truth starts revealing its magnificent beauty.

Madoff With Their Money - Philosophical and Ethical Discussion

Bernard L. Madoff allegedly tricked defrauded investors in a Ponzi scheme, the investment company (Hedge Fund) still has Billions of Assets apparently, which will be divided up and some investors may see at least a very small portion of their money. If all the news reports are correct, this will indeed, be the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of humankind, one that went on for about 35-years, although we do not know yet if it was fraudulent from the get-go, as at one time it may have been legit.

What we do know is that this scandal has rocked the financial world and affected many industry sectors from Entertainment to Commercial Real Estate and from Banking to the Non Profit Sector. One has to ask where on Earth were the regulators during the last three decades? There are all sorts of speculation and perhaps Madoff got a free ride due to his careful approach to whose money he took, his coziness with the SEC, and his spotless reputation on Wall Street.

Now then, let's back up for a second and discuss a little philosophy shall we. We are calling Bernard L. Madoff a fraudster and yet, his is not the only hedge fund that lost everyone's money. Many other hedge funds promised huge returns and did quite well trading garbage and playing with Credit Default Swaps, obviously they realized that such a game was built on a foundation of swamp gas. Many of these Hedge Funds lost everyone's money too.

Mr. Madoff, did not lose everyone's money investing because he wasn't investing any, except perhaps a little for show, or so we believe from media reports right now. So, in reality his Hedge Fun was much more efficient, he just took the money, while the others traded it into oblivion on complete nonsense. One method we call appalling and the other we call criminal, but mind you the net result is indeed the same for the investor who has lost all their money.

In essence Mr. Madoff skipped all the bull, and more efficiently took the money, while the other hedge funds wasted it on a scheme they knew or should have known was ridiculous, tossing around hot potatoes, and dancing around parked chairs with broken legs, with too many players until the music stopped. Well, now the music is completely stopped for everyone so from a philosophical standpoint and the ethics of Ponzi Schemes aside, what's the difference in the end. Everyone still loses.

Both Hedge Fund methods in this case are illusions, Mr. Madoff's illusion at least lasted longer (three decades), while the other Hedge Funds playing credit default swaps lasted for a brief flicker of time. Why did all this happen and why do people feel entitled to make billions of dollars they didn't earn, don't deserve, and we all have to pay for in the end. And before we answer that shouldn't we hold up a mirror to the whole of society and ask ourselves about this "entitlement" myth, as it seems to permeate humanity.

I guess my questions are;

  1. Who is next to fall?
  2. Why are we so surprised?
  3. What brilliant financial Ponzi Scheme is next?

How To Get A Legitimate Buyer For Your House

It is easy to come across a property owner, who has a house to sell, but no buyers. The buyers, who do come looking interested in the house, also go away without a purchase. If you are a property seller, then surely you would want to avoid this scenario for yourself. There are many reasons to make sure that your house sells quickly. An unsold house starts to gather a bad reputation. Rumors and whispers constantly surround it and make it repelling to some buyers, who believe in the gossips that the house has a flaw, a bad history or a deceiving seller, etc. If the house has not been sold till now, then it translates as the house is not worth buying. If you were a buyer, then you would have probably gone through the same considerations and second thoughts. So, think from that point of view and take the following steps to ensure that your house gets a legitimate buyer soon -

* Be realistic. You cannot expect a legitimate buyer to accept a higher than standard price. You need to know the reality of the market and state your price accordingly. If you ask for anything, higher than the standard rate, then you will have to explain it through some genuine upgrades and modifications. If you keep quoting high prices stubbornly, then you will soon see that the prospective buyers will stop coming to your door.

* You can lower your prices, get an easy buyer and suffer losses. Vice-versa can happen and nobody may come for the purchase, because now they think that you desperately want to get rid of the property, due to legal, property-related or structural flaws in the house.

* Get a surveyor to come and give a balanced estimate of the value of your house, so that you know what to expect. The buyers too would know that this is the real deal and there is no deception at play.

* Get a real estate agent. An agent can guide you where you are going wrong and can give practical suggestions, based on experience, market research and present trends.

* In the noble undertaking of cleaning up your house, do not mistake one of your rooms, which you think is the least important, as a dumping place. Buyers like to see a house that is ideal for living in all aspects. They may need that room which you have converted into a dustbin. The presence of the garbage will put them off and can make them move on.

* Stage your house. This is a proven technique to sell property faster.

* Make the house a home and present it like a gift with everything looking new, spacious, clean and fresh. Add some beauty touches inside and outside the house through plants, flowers, decorative items, fresh paint, etc.

If you wish people to know about how great your house is, then tell them! Advertise through all means, especially online listings and paste pictures of your house. Show them the description of the upgrades done. This will definitely get you a legitimately interested buyer.

The Difference in Brain Between Man and Woman - Part 2: How Did This Come?

After Part 1 you're all wondering: why is this? I already explained why the difference are there, looking at evolution (it's because men are made for fighting and hunting and women for caring for babies and the social group). But then, how does the brain become what it should be in men/women? Is this difference present from birth or only later on?

Certain hormones, we call them 'sex hormones', start influencing a certain individual when it's still developing itself as a fetus. A study by Isreali researchers found that a male fetus, just 26 weeks old, shows a significant difference in brain from a female fetus. The disparities are found in the corpus callosum (bridge between left and right hemisphere), which in the brain of the female is much thicker than in the brain of the male. This is due to the fact that females use both their hemispheres, while males use mostly left.

Until puberty, girls continue to outperform boys in the use of language and fine motor skills. Boys show superiority over girls when it comes to math and geometry. These areas mature about four years earlier in boys than in girls. A recent study concluded that the brain of a 12-year-old-girl resembles that of an 8-year-old boy (when it comes to math). The specialities of the girls though, language and fine motor skills (such as handwriting), mature about six years earlier.

Also, after puberty, males contain about 6.5 times more gray matter ('thinking matter') than women, while female brains contain about 9.5 times more white matter('connecting matter'). But even more relevant is the fact that the frontal area and temporal area of the cortex are much more precisely organized in women (and bigger). Because this explains the fact that girls often call boys 'immature' or 'childish'. The lobes that 'make you mature' are much bigger, better organized, and earlier completed in women than in men.

Nature vs Nurture

But is it all nature? Nope. It all depends on how men and women use their special mental skills.

Have you ever been wondering 'why doe females always feel the need to gossip?!'. As stated earlier, females have a more sophisticated area for dealing with language. And therefore, they use it a lot. And by using it, it becomes even more refined. So at the end it will be this 'huge area'. If a woman just doesn't speak very much because of her character or other circumstances, this area would not develop this much. And again, why this is can be explained via evolution or nurture in the first place. Women used to have the job to take care of children and establish relationships between social groups so they could stay alive.

And we could also look at it as 'you gotta make do with what ya got'. For example, when giving someone directions, men use a completely different part of the brain than women. Women use the cerebral cortex, and mostly rely on landmark cues ('turn right at the supermarket'), while men use a nucleus deep inside the brain, in the left hippocampus, and mostly rely on the spatial aspect (depth reckoning, 'go west here').

And then we haven't even talked about emotions yet. Women are faster and more accurate at identifying emotions. Coming with that, is the ability to be more adept than men at encoding facial differences and determining change in vocal intonation (which explains why it seems as if every woman can sing amazingly well).

But then there is a surprising twist when it comes to what almost everybody thinks 'women just have much more emotions than men'. This is not true. Women actually have a much greater control of aggression and anger than men. Men just don't show their emotions, it's weak, and therefore they always hide it, though their initial reaction to something is much heavier. Women on the other hand control their emotions and only show what is 'useful' or 'can't hurt' but are also most of the time much softer in reacting when someone has done something wrong.

What do we have in common?

A lot, actually. Almost everything. Not only is every brain different, and there are men with lots of emotional control, and women with more than average spatial-skills.

Take for example the spatial-skills. Every part of the brain can be improved, but how the spatial part? Well, by just walking through space. Doing sports. And boys get to do that much more than girls, which gives them a great advantage therefore. If we'd treat girls and boys the same, they'd eventually become the same is the theory. Which is quite logical actually, and has research to prove it.

But then people raise the question: do we want that? I mean, isn't what nature has done for us enough? Don't men and women complement each other?

They do, and many people believe that it's best for men to stay men and women to stay women, because joined together this will have lots of advantages. But more on this psychological part, in Part 3.

Idiot Winds Part 1

Method acting is a technique learned by serious actors to support them in what they do on stage or camera. It is not a "paint-by-numbers" technique to be sheepishly followed by those who are without talent, creativity and acting ability. Creating the character, telling the story, playing not only the scene but also the intent (of the character and the dramatist/script writer) is the actor's job and can certainly be done without using Method acting. Method actors are made aware of this fact over and over again while they train with me. What The Method helps them to do is to make what the character experiences real, believable, truthful and honest. We use the techniques to solve acting problems. Method, therefore, provides the cherry on the cake!

There are many methods of acting that are used by successful and competent actors and I encourage my students to use any methods of acting that will help them to do good work. I have yet, however, to discover any other technique that brings about the honest response and expression I require in a performance, which is why I believe in Method acting so passionately.

So... let's have some fun!
Let's look at some of the myths, misconceptions and stupidities
blown about by idiot winds!

The Method is dangerous because it makes you crazy... look at what happened to Marilyn Monroe!
My question to the propagators of this ridiculous belief is... what about all the other Method actors who are not "crazy"? Al Pacino, the late Paul Newman, Clare Danes and Helen Hunt all look quite sane to me. I have personally never experienced a single person "losing their mind" (permanently!) during my studies in New York or in my class... not once in the past 32 years of my involvement with this technique. There are many people drawn to the arts who have psychological, emotional or substance abuse problems, of course, but they enter the process already somewhat off-balance. If you learn how to use the techniques correctly - even "traumatic" emotional memory work - the results with regard to your state of mind can only be positive.

The Method is only usable when playing serious, very emotional roles where you have to cry and scream.
Really? What about Gene Wilder's cooky movie characters? Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie"? The different types created by Johnny Depp in countless brilliant performances? Throughout the years I've done comedies, stylized plays and Absurdist theatre as well as serious and Medieval drama, and my students have used Method Acting in all of these different genres very successfully to create characters an audience could believe in.

The Method, as taught in school, can only be used when acting on stage. I want to act on camera!
If that's the case I have no idea where all those successful, brilliant, famous film actors, who studied and use The Method when working, are coming from. A third force... or perhaps the Hollywood Fairy?... must be involved in some diabolical scheme!

Method actors are difficult to work with... and they always want a motivation for everything they're required to do.
I guess some actors are difficult to work with, no matter what their "method" may be. I personally find actors who pretend, indicate, fake it, come to rehearsal unprepared, arrive late, behave like prima donnas and get jealous of fellow actors difficult to work with. The actors I train are expected to behave like professionals. They are taught to respect the director and do what's expected of them. They're supposed to take their work seriously and do their best at all times. Method actors who have trained with me for four years know how I expect them to behave - whether they do what I require or not - and if they behave unprofessionally it is not The Method's fault but their own.

Yes, a major part of how we work requires finding a motivation for each action the character executes, otherwise the action will be empty and without intent or purpose. It will not be motivated and justified, leading to a dishonest performance. My actors are taught to find these motivations for themselves and not to bug the director with it. It is the actor's responsibility.

I believe that partially trained actors who don't understand how the work is to be used, are the culprits here. I personally do not regard anyone who has studied for less than four years as a Method actor. Actors who have been partially trained can, in fact, give The Method a bad name in the industry because they are bound to suffer from bad working practice, misconceptions and ignorance as far as correct application of the work is concerned.

A QUESTIONAIRE RE: THE METHOD AS ANSWERED BY STEPHANIE VAN NIEKERK

(including some myths, misconceptions and idiotic beliefs!)

WHERE DID YOU STUDY?
I completed a B.A. Drama degree at the University of Pretoria in 1976 and then spent 1980 to 1984 at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York. While there, I was invited to become a member of the Second Studio for Actors under the direction of Harv Dean. I also studied Philosophy and English Literature through UNISA, became a certified Shiatsu Therapist and received a Diploma in Holistic Psychology from the Natural Health Institute during the nine years I lived in Toronto, Canada.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STUDY METHOD ACTING IN NEW YORK?
I arrived in Toronto in 1977, without working papers. By the time I received permanent residence and the right to work, I had not acted for a number of years. I decided that I needed a "refresher course", went for interviews to a number of schools in New York (Stella Adler, Herbert Berghoff etc.), but decided on the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute's summer course (four months) because his name was the best known and therefore familiar to me. Watching the students work at my first class, I realized that this was what I'd been praying for all my life... and that I was starting over after twenty years as an actor (I had started working professionally as a child of eight). It was also clear to me that nothing I had learnt up to that time was really applicable to the Method way of working. I immediately recognized that the Method would give me the means by which I could discover and express the inner depth I always knew I had, but could never tap or reveal as an actress, that I would never have to push or "act" or fake it ever again! Since it doesn't take four months to develop the necessary skills, I ended up staying for four years.

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE STUDYING IN NEW YORK COMPARED TO SOUTH AFRICA?
My New York experience meant FREEDOM, letting go of old beliefs and judgements and ways of looking at myself and acting and the world. It was a time of self-discovery, growth, change and spiritual evolvement. I also met and befriended not only Americans and Canadians, but people from Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Holland, Germany, England, Ireland, Russia, Central and South America and learnt from and about them and their realities. The world became my oyster!

HOW DID THE TEACHING METHODS DIFFER BETWEEN THE STRASBERG INSTITUTE AND THE TRAINING YOU RECEIVED IN SOUTH AFRICA?
The main difference between Strasberg and the University of Pretoria, as well as private teachers in S.A., was that the Method teaches you very specific techniques to help you to overcome acting problems. You may use them however you see fit once you've learnt how and once your instrument has been trained to respond to sensory recall. Once you know how to use the Method, you have absolute freedom as an actor to make your own choices re: what exercises/techniques to use, how to work, which different philosophies or ways of working you combine to get the results of truth and honesty and reality in your work. Being a Method actor does not mean painting by numbers - it is not a mechanical, robotic repeat of learnt exercises. Yet, once I'd been studying the Method techniques for a period of time, I realized how well it worked for me, how safe and real I felt when working on stage because I was concentrating on WORK all the time, I did not want to go back to acting mechanically, flying by the seat of my pants and hoping for inspiration to hit!

I learned many things, both theoretical and practical, at the University of Pretoria, for which I will always be grateful. Certain stage techniques and the experience I'd gained during my three years there are still invaluable. Yet... I was not taught how to act. The varied exercises (Stanislavsky techniques and others) we worked with in class were diffused, generalized - definitely not a SYSTEM or way of working that had clear goals or results. They were not, in my experience, applicable to the very specific craft of building a real character and doing believable work. As important as stage techniques, games and improvs are to bring about technically professional performances, open up the actor's instrument and lead her to creativity and discovery, as a training tool they only go so far. Substance and depth is needed to train an actor to do meaningful work. It takes four years to train a Method actor and I do not regard anyone who has spent less time on their Method studies as such.

DID YOU STUDY WITH ANY MEMORABLE TEACHERS OR DIRECTORS?
I had tremendous respect for the teachers at Strasberg that I finally chose to work with: Irma Sandrey, Hope Arthur and Harv Dean. Strasberg himself died before I was advanced enough to be considered for his Master Classes. In South Africa I learnt a lot from Carel Trichardt and the late Fred Steyn. I love and respect them all to this day.

WHAT IS TALENT?
I can only tell you what I think it is... Mainly sensitivity, intelligence, strong analytical abilities, awareness, the ability to communicate, insight, good concentration, strong will and perseverance. The Method can make believable, strong, creative actors out of those who possess these qualities and are willing to do the work. The really wonderful actors, those who knock your socks off, have a few extras - charm, charisma, self-confidence, a gut recognition and faith in what feels right - and a little thing called "magic", which is indefinable!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE STARTING OUT IN ACTING?
STUDY!! Learn your craft from proven, good teachers. Build your skills - how to speak, move, experience, express, create, communicate and behave effectively and truthfully and never stop honing those skills. Get to know yourself and your instrument, because that is what you use to do your work. Travel. Read widely and as much as you possibly can. Learn to appreciate ALL the arts. Study psychology - the human being - and the philosophies of the world. Work to gain maturity, self-knowledge, empathy, humility and self-esteem because, in this industry, you're going to need it!

Be very clear on what type of actor you want to be, and when you go out there to look for work - don't give up! Have faith in yourself and your skills and the knowledge you've gained. I also believe that one shouldn't wait for others to employ you - not the way things are in S.A. today re: the industry. Get together with others, write and create original work and perform where-ever and whenever you can. WORK - even if there seems not to be a place for you in existing structures at this time.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN OBSTACLES YOU COME UP AGAINST IN TEACHING ACTORS?
The main obstacles I come up against are blocks in the instrument - psychological, spiritual and physical. Also fear and resistance to self-knowledge and looking ridiculous, fear of exploration and discovery, suppressed emotional issues - South African society is restricted, angry, has difficulty trusting and opening up - laziness and wanting things to just happen without working for it, and let's not forget about ignorance and stupidity...

Due to the school system being what it is, students also wish to be spoon-fed. They need to be convinced to accept the fact that they make choices every moment of the day and that they are responsible for how their lives turn out as a result of those choices. Many young people look for excuses and wish to make others "wrong" and/or responsible for the fact that they, themselves, are not in control of their lives / work / studies. As a result, irresponsible behavior, laziness (again!) and lack of willpower become obstacles in getting results.

Since 1994 one of the greatest problems I face is the incredibly low level of education in South Africa. Vast numbers of students who have passed Grade 12 are in fact functionally illiterate. They can hardly read and their vocabulary, spelling, grammar and analytical abilities are practically non-existent. For the past 6 years I've had to test these abilities before making a decision whether to accept a student into the school. Many with Grade 12 operate on anything between Grade 5 and Grade 8 when it comes to world standards. A number of my students need to take remedial classes in language, reading and comprehension in order to be able to do my course. The education system in this country has failed these young people. It's a disgrace!

DO YOUR STUDENTS STUDY ANY LITERATURE APART FROM THE PLAYS THEY REHEARSE?
Absolutely!! They have to read the following books: An Actor Prepares and Building a Character by Stanislavsky, On Method Acting by Edward Dwight Easty, Method - Or Madness? by Robert Lewis, A Dream of Passion by Lee Strasberg, Do's and Don't's of Drama by Jean Lee Latham, The Empty Space by Peter Brook and Freeing the Natural Voice by Kristin Linklater. The student needs to pass three written assignments every year.

We also do three different in-depth text analysis workshops each year for which they have to do research on the dramatist, his/her body of work and the particular play in question, including one Absurd Drama as well as Absurdist principles. I expect of them to attend classes with an expert on each text analysis assignment for approximately two months before the exam in order that they may pass.

The students put together their own Prose and Poetry Programs and I also expect of them to do extensive research re: the dramatists and plays they do scenes from in class. They are encouraged to read widely and often.

WHY DO YOU THINK METHOD ACTORS HAVE TROUBLE DOING SITCOMS?
Never having done a sitcom myself, I can only guess... Fortunately sitcoms are basically superficial, silly and geared towards mass consumption. Audiences do not wish to either think or feel deeply when tuning in and will happily accept atrocious acting... in fact, they expect it!

I'd imagine that inexperienced, half-trained actors (those who did not complete their studies) who need more time to prepare would find the "sausage machine" process of quickly doing a run to basically sort out technical stuff and then shooting the scene, unnerving to deal with if they are faced with acting problems to be solved - it depends on how the process is run and how much rehearsal time is allowed on any given set. I expect that experienced Method actors (like Al Pacino and Helen Hunt and those who are properly trained) can get work to solve any problems they may experience within seconds, and that the system would therefore not cause them any difficulties at all. You have to understand that longstanding, experienced Method actors have instruments that are well trained, primed and ready to work. They also are very sure of what the different techniques can give them and they can work VERY FAST, needing seconds to incorporate a choice into their acting. Method helps to solve acting problems and make you believable so the audience can relate - that's what it's there for, to help. And it does!

Unfortunately, many of my students who were close to brilliant at the end of their fourth year of study, simply stop doing "the work" when they are cast with non-Method actors. I suppose they feel different and therefore embarrassed to do the work in front of actors who have no idea what they are doing. Maybe they fear being laughed at or excluded or regarded as elitist or ridiculous. I don't know. So they gossip and flirt and chew the fat and play silly buggers with their pals while waiting to do a scene rather than doing what they are getting paid to do - the work! As a result they become just as bad as they were in their first year very quickly - indicating, play-acting, faking emotion and response. This saddens me deeply.

Trained Method actors don't have to make an exhibition of preparing their work while other actors look on. Due to the fact that their instruments are in perfect working order after many years of training, they simply need to separate themselves from the group and quietly focus on their chosen sensory work in a relaxed way, stay concentrated while keeping the preparation going and strengthen it when the cameras are rolling. Nobody will think anything other than that they are shy or snotty or like their own company! And as for that... who cares?

CAN YOU DEFINE "EMOTIONAL MEMORY"?
Yes, I can. Emotional or Affective Memory is the conscious creation of sensory aspects in / of a remembered situation / emotion which has occurred in the actor's own past life through experiencing the sight, sound, touch, taste and smell related to that situation / emotion and the application of the response to the character being portrayed on the stage.

HOW DOES AN ACTOR PREPARE FOR AN EMOTIONAL MEMORY EXERCISE?
By doing a full relaxation the Method way to focus concentration and release excess tension from the instrument. More ordinary situations from their own lives are, of course, not a problem, but I do not allow my students to practice emotional memories that are traumatic or may have deep psychological impact, by themselves at home. Whether they do the memory in class with my assistance or in class by themselves, deeply emotional work is only done when I am present to guide, assist and help them towards full expression and to deal with any blocks that may come up to prevent expression. Traumatic situations have to be seven years old before attempting to make use of them as emotional memories.

DO THE ACTORS USE REAL, HONEST EMOTION OR REMEMBERED EMOTION?
Remembered emotion is not real or honest? An emotion that happens spontaneously, unexpectedly and in the moment can easily cause problems during performance. One never knows what may follow as a result and the actor may not be able to maintain or repeat or control such an emotion. Remembered emotion comes from a situation that has happened before, and can therefore be recreated with sense memory and repeated and controlled at will by the actor when necessary for a specific response, as needed by the character being portrayed. This, however, does not mean that the emotion is fake or dishonest. Method actors do not only deal in emotion - they deal in real response as the character within a specific situation. Actors are not required to have big emotions throughout every performance but the response (even to small things like having a chat with your mom while preparing dinner) must be real.

DO YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO BECAME INSANE BECAUSE OF THE METHOD?
Personally? No. I've never heard of such a thing either. If remembering aspects of your past caused people to go insane there wouldn't be a single sane person on this planet. If a person is seriously off-balance, psychologically, or if they have drug and / or alcohol problems, personality disturbances etc. etc., anything could push them over the edge. They'll probably, in fact, have the odd breakdown in varying degrees of seriousness a number of times in their lives. The Method does not CAUSE mental or emotional disturbance. I believe it helps people to deal with unhappy experiences. In my experience, working with the Method brings about higher levels of maturity, insight, self-knowledge, understanding of the self and others, empathy, spiritual depth and wisdom in my students. I see incredible personal growth and positive changes within the first year and it only becomes more apparent in those who choose to stay four years to complete the course.

I KNOW THAT USING THE METHOD PLACES A LOT OF EMOTIONAL STRESS ON THE ACTORS. WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP THEM OVERCOME IT?
This is totally untrue. I disagree most strongly that the Method as such places emotional stress on actors. They stress less during performance if they focus on doing the work, which makes them feel safe and in control. Even if they have to create highly emotional work for a scene or throughout a play or film, they know exactly what to do the moment the cameras stop rolling or the curtain comes down. They physically and emotionally release the work by doing relaxation, shaking out, making sound and thus "coming back to reality". When they walk out of the theatre or studio they leave the work behind totally until they have to get it back again for the next show or shoot. This is much better than being a mechanical actor who believes he has to walk cripple for three months or take the character with him wherever he goes, for fear of "losing" the character, even when not performing, don't you think? Method actors drop the work and pick it back up as and when they need it and live their ordinary, normal lives when not performing. Much less stressful!

I've certainly never experienced emotional stress as a result of the work itself during the four years I studied at Strasberg. I'm aware of the fact that my actors experience stress, but it comes from their own life-issues - break-ups with lovers, work problems, self-esteem issues, bad relationships with people in their lives, fears, angers, blocked feelings, resistance, unresolved emotional baggage. So... they may get tense or scared about doing certain exercises due to their own personal challenges.

If that is the case and I become aware of the fear / resistance, I encourage them to really focus on relaxation to let go of all excess tension in the instrument. I encourage them to let their personal issues go, through a little exercise where they put these things aside until they can deal with them later. I help them to focus the concentration and the will. If the problems persist, I discuss their issues with them, as it relates to the work, and give advice, guidance and support on how they can let it go.

I get very fond of my students and I treat them with loving affection as often as I give them heck! I frequently suggest that students see a health professional or psychologist if their health or personal problems seem serious, and cannot be overcome by the above methods. I do, however, try not to get personally involved with their lives and issues if same does not get in the way of the work. It's none of my business!!

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF "SONG AND DANCE"? HAS IT ANYTHING TO DO WITH TRAINING THE "WILL" OF THE ACTOR?
The exercise addresses several aspects re: the opening up of the actor's instrument. Awareness and control of emotion and expression, development of spontaneous response, elimination of involuntary nervous expression, the breaking of verbal and physical movement habits as well as other habitual responses, open communication with an audience, development of concentration, immediate response to direction, awareness of tempo-rhythms and the ability to respond to same, and control of the instrument.

Yes! The actor's "will" is of the utmost importance here in doing something that is actually very simple but at the same time extremely difficult to do, because it goes against the grain of his training and his usual habitual responses.

WHEN YOU SAY TO THE ACTOR: "TAKE A MINUTE", WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Do a little relaxation, focus the concentration, center yourself, prepare.

... AND DON'T YOU THINK THAT ONE MINUTE IS ACTUALLY RATHER A LONG TIME ON STAGE?
It's a lifetime! Method actors do not, however, "take a minute" or "speak out" or do a full relaxation with movement and sound and opening up while on stage or make the audience wait while they get their sense memory, during performance! They do so before performing and in the training situation to teach the instrument to become aware of and control tension / lack of concentration / indicating and let it go unobserved, while working. The training process takes time, but once the instrument is primed to do the work, difficulties while working can be dealt with, without "taking a minute" during performance. That is why it takes several years to train a Method actor fully. Once s/he starts working professionally, "taking a minute" is only required before performing but totally unnecessary and not desired during in performance.

HOW LONG DO YOU THINK A STUDENT HAS TO STUDY TO BE READY FOR PROFESSIONAL ACTING?
This depends on the individual. There are film actors who started as children without any training at all, like Jodie Foster and Leonardo Di Caprio, who are both very good. But then, film acting is different to stage acting because you have all the "takes" you need to get the moment and then you can "edit" a good performance together from whatever the actor managed to give you. Depending on how fast the given person works, I regard my students as ready to start doing auditions after three to five years of part-time training - depending on the actor's instrument and understanding.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT DON RICHARDSON, WHO IS AGAINST THE METHOD, SAYING: "ART IS A REFLECTION OF REALITY, NOT REALITY ITSELF."
I agree with him.

IS IT TRUE THAT METHOD ACTORS ALWAYS PLAY VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES AND FORGET THE AUTHOR'S CONCEPT OF THE CHARACTER?
Balderdash! This is an utter fallacy. Some actors who don't know what they're doing because they haven't studied long enough and / or are there only to show how well they can emote or get into the "look at me, ain't I good" thing, may be guilty of this. But you find actors of every type and stripe who don't know what they're doing and act only to be in the spotlight.

The good, well-trained Method actor knows that you have to play the author. Everything he does - text analysis; character analysis; research; answering questions re: intent, obstacle, Who, What, Where, When, Why, the magic IF, motivation, justification, What do I want?, What do I do to get what I want?, What is the most important thing that must be created in this scene?; choosing his Method work to make the character real and believable - EVERYTHING is about creating the character the author intended him to play - allowing, of course, for the fact that interpretations may differ. My students know that I will never tolerate an actor who uses the work as therapy, or for self-aggrandizement, emotional masturbation or "getting away with it". It should be every actor's honor to do his job right, and his job is to play the author. Anyway, who are you going to use if not yourself? The girl next door?

IS METHOD DEATH TO COMEDY?
Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle in "Young Frankenstein", Robert de Niro in "Analyze This!", Marilyn Monroe in "The Prince and the Showgirl", Angelina Jolie in "Pushing Tin" - there are so many examples of Method actors who do wonderful comedy work.

The more real and believable when the pigeon drops one on your head, the more the average moviegoer can relate and see himself (or his neighbor) in you, the funnier you are. The more you indicate, anticipate and comment, the more of a trial to those who have to sit through it.

DO YOUR STUDENTS DO TRUST EXERCISES?
In Group Theatre classes, yes. Not in Method. The work the Method actors do with substitution, for instance, gives them relationship, even if they don't know and trust their acting partner(s). You can substitute anyone and anything and be comfortable within that situation.

DO YOUR STUDENTS DO IMPROVISATIONAL WORK?
Absolutely. Improvisation is an integral part of the Method. I do improvisations with my Group Theatre students and expect all my Method students to use improvisations whenever they prepare scenes for class or when we work on a show. When we do a workshop production based on improvisation we start from scratch with only an idea at the beginning of the process and go on stage with a fifty-minute to one-hour play by the end of it.

There's a lot of resistance and negativity out there re: the subject I teach. People in the industry have read a book or two and / or worked with someone whom they dislike who calls him or herself a Method actor, and they form all kinds of judgement and beliefs regarding this way of working, while being totally ignorant of what it entails. Feeling ignorant and therefore threatened by something you don't understand causes fear, resentment and resistance. You cannot learn about the Method from a book! You need to experience it over the period of at least one year in order to be able to form an opinion. One cannot talk about something you know nothing about! If a person in this country has not studied with me or at one of the Method schools in the United States for long enough to know what s/he is doing (between three and five years), s/he is not a Method actor.

How to Talk to Your Ex Girlfriend Without Turning Her Off

Sometimes I think that most guys don't really understand just how easy it can be to turn off an ex girlfriend that you want to be able to get back together with just by saying the wrong thing to her. There are countless stories that I have heard where it seems like the guy really does have a good chance of being able to win back his ex girlfriend, only he ends up saying something that turns her off and once that happens, it's kind of hard to recover from that and get back into a position where you can still win her back.

Here are some tips for talking to your ex girlfriend that might help you avoid making the mistake of saying something that ends up turning her off:

1. You definitely don't want to probe her about her personal life since the two of you broke up with one another.

It's one thing to show an interest in what she has been up to recently and it is another to come across like you are trying to probe her to dig up some juicy gossip or sordid details. You have to respect the fact that since you and her have broken up, her personal life is hers and if she wants to tell you about it, she will. If she doesn't and you make it apparent that you are going to try really hard to get her to spill the beans, it is just going to end up making you seem like you are really insecure and that is not something that is going to go down well with your ex girlfriend.

2. You also don't want to rehash old arguments that should have been left alone a long time ago.

I remember talking to this one guy who was seemingly about to get his ex girlfriend back. Everything was going great and then, he brought up an old argument that they had back when they were first dating and next thing you know, they are arguing about that same thing again. Of course, that kind of changed things and he wasn't able to win her back and that probably would not have happened like that had he just kept the past in the past and didn't bring up that old argument that really didn't hold much importance in the first place.

3. Do not cast blame on your ex girlfriend for the end of the relationship if you happen to be talking to her and you want to get her back.

This is a big error to make and it can be quite costly. Casting blame is never really productive, but in a situation where you are dealing with an ex girlfriend and you know that you want to win her back, it can end up being the one thing that she holds onto as a reason for why it would be a mistake for her to get back with you. There is no reason to try to play the blame game with her, especially if you are trying to get back on her good side.

Signs of a Possible Lay Off

There have always been economic rises and falls. During hard times, several universal signs can help you detect an upcoming lay off. Read this article to be prepared for any twists in your professional life.

1. Recruiting Stops
If your company has stopped hiring, cut down on its summer associate program and does not conduct interviews, most certainly, it is in trouble. Update your resume, add all new details to it and register as a job seeker on one of career websites. Being prepared for a possible layoff will help you start a new job quickly.

2. Rumors
Rumors do spread fast, and although it may seem strange, it's important to pay proper attention to rumors because they do not come from nothing. Although every news your ear catches may be not true, gossip and rumors deserve to be paid attention to.

3. Changes Inside the Company
You have to be on guards if the company is being restructured and reorganized, and if your boss has asked you to train others how to carry out your duties. In this case, most probably, you are in danger of being laid off.

4. Independent Consultants Are Invited
Independent consultants are usually invited to help a company work out new development strategies in the conditions of a crisis. Unfortunately, very often layoffs become a part of their plan.

5. Your Competitors are in Deep Trouble.
Not only your company may be undergoing hard times. Study your competitors, maybe the whole industry is in crisis at the moment. Then you need to consider a career change, i.e. working in an allied industry or a completely new and unknown one. Try to be positive about everything, take it as a new career step that is sure to open new opportunities to you.

6. Cutting down on Perks and Benefits
There are various luxuries a company may cut down on - to call off company picnics and parties, to change company car policies and abolishing financial assistance.

7. Meetings Behind Closed Doors
Frequented closed-door meeting with partners and top personnel, evasive answers to direct questions about layoffs signal that the company's future is being deliberated.

8. Salary Cuts
Cutting down on employees' salaries is the direct result of cutting down on the whole company's budget. In this case, employees may be asked to list their job duties to prove they deserve the amount of money they get. Actually, being in financial trouble a company has got two alternative ways out: either to cut down on employees' salary or to start searching right candidates for layoffs. In both cases, you may be in jeopardy.

Government Motors is Dead - Long Live Government Motors

It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent [sic] into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed...
- Pravda Online, "American capitalism gone with a whimper"

Pravda is the Russian word for "truth." It is also the name of Russia's most famous daily newspaper, with roots dating back to 1908.

Boris Yeltsin shut down the original Pravda in 1991. It perhaps seemed fitting that, after 79 years as the official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, the voice of the Soviet Union would die with the Soviet Union.

But by the end of the '90s, the paper had resurrected itself in multiple new forms - including a tabloid version and an online version - thanks to the tenacity of former Pravda employees.

The irony is exquisite, don't you think? At a time when the American free press is unabashedly fawning in its coverage of the White House and the overall handling of the financial crisis, a former Soviet-era broadsheet sees fit to lecture the United States on its embrace of Marxism.

"Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then [sic] the drama in DC that directly affects their lives," thunders Pravda Online. "They care more for their 'right' to choke down a McDonalds burger or a Burger King burger than for their constitutional rights." Oh, ouch...

But does the "Marxist" charge (see opening quote) really have merit? Or is it just a combination of sour grapes and hot air?

In answering that question, the General Motors saga - for all intensive purposes now Government Motors - seems a fair focal point.

The Origin of Government Motors

GM was once seen as a bastion of pride... a standard bearer of quality (if you can believe it), and even a hotbed of innovation... a shining example of all that was good and noble in the U.S. free market system. For a very long time, what was good for General Motors was, indeed, good for America.

The Beach Boys once sang songs about GM cars. Can you imagine the songs that would be sung now?

For nearly eight decades, GM was the largest carmaker in America (and thus the world). But for the last three of those decades at least, GM was on a trudging death march... a long, slow, denial-fueled slide into stagnation and decay.

So what happened?

The way to think about this, in your humble editor's opinion, is to recognize that the transformation from "General Motors" into "Government Motors" actually began a long time ago. It has been a long, long road. This whirlwind of cram downs and rule changes and bailout billions is merely the coup de grĂ¢ce.

In many ways, General Motors wound up hostage to its own good fortune. At the height of its power, the iconic company was so dominant and so profitable that everyone in America imagined GM to be an unstoppable juggernaut.

But the bigger and bulkier GM got, the more the company was viewed as a cash cow... no longer so much a lean, mean free market enterprise as a sprawling American institution, rich enough to hand out freebies to everyone - or at least anyone smart enough to get their hand in the till.

It was this vision of never-ending profits and unchallenged dominance that cost General Motors dearly. The GM executives who made disastrous long-term deals with the unions in the '50s and '60s no doubt imagined the company would be just fine. Near the peak of its power, it was all but impossible to imagine a time when times would not be so flush.

A One-Way Participation...

Is the story starting to sound familiar yet?

The more profitable and dominant GM became, the more pressure the company faced (from union members and politicians alike) to "share the wealth." The union members ultimately made it all but impossible to shut down production or close factories (other than at enormous cost). Politicians did the same thing at the state and local level, making it all but impossible to close down dealerships.

The trouble with all this wealth-sharing is that the whole thing was a one-way street.

In a more functional, two-way relationship, there is a recognition of the difference between good times and bad times. Like in a business partnership, for example. When times are good, the partners in the business do well. But when times are hard, the partners in the business do poorly. They share the pain of hardship.

General Motors had no ability to share the pain of hardship with its "partners" - the unions, dealers, politicians and the like who all lined up for a piece of the juggernaut. In this GM was like a car that had no reverse gear. The political costs of doing business could be ratcheted up, but they could not be ratcheted down again.

And so "General Motors" really started becoming "Government Motors" long before the handouts came, because this is exactly how governments work too. When times are prosperous, people want their government to be generous. When times are hard, people want their governments to be even more generous. There is no reverse gear.

Of course, someone has to pay for all that largesse. But as long as the check writers are in the minority, the majority can have its merry way. (Perhaps this is why Thomas Jefferson is reputed to have said, "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.")

...And a Long-Time Transformation

So the first step in the transformation of GM was the cultural entrenchment of largesse - treating the company as if it were an ever-expanding arm of government, rather than a free market enterprise that needed to retain the ability to bend and flex with the times.

The second step came when GM lost its way, and the official government (Uncle Sam) found increasing need to step in and help.

Longtime car buffs argue that GM's precipitous decline really began in the 1980s, with CEO Roger Smith. A reorganization gone badly wrong, combined with tough new competition from the Japanese, led to utter disaster. Quality went into freefall even as car plants began to idle. "By 1989," BusinessWeek reports, "GM was losing more than $2,000 on every car it built..."

Internally, GM's bureaucratic corporate culture was another disaster. In an internal 1988 memo, one insider complained that "our culture discourages open, frank debate... there exists a clear perception among the rank and file of GM personnel that management does not receive bad news well... our most serious problem pertains to organization and culture."

As BusinessWeek further reports, former GM board member Ross Perot complained that same year that "At GM the stress is not on getting results - on winning - but on bureaucracy, on conforming to the GM System. You get to the top of General Motors not by doing something but by not making a mistake."

More than 20 years ago, General Motors already looked, felt and acted like a de facto Detroit wing of the U.S. government in all the ways that mattered - the shoddy quality of its products, the epic scale of its largesse, and the ham-fisted way it was run.

Maybe it was inevitable, then, that "Government Motors" would finally be made official... and thus sadly fitting for Uncle Sam to take an outright 60% stake (with the unions getting a fair chunk of the rest).

If so, perhaps we should think of this event not as a death, but a birth. Maybe GM is like some horrible moth, breaking out of its multi-decade chrysalis stage at long last. Government Motors is dead... long live Government Motors.

More of the Same

Back in December 2008, the not-yet-defenestrated Rick Wagoner predicted a GM bankruptcy could cost taxpayers as much as $100 billion. As it turns out, Wagoner is on track to be right. Unless, of course, that number turns out to be conservative - which it most likely will, when all the hidden costs are factored in.

In total, Washington will be lending a cool $49.5 billion to the reorganized GM - a fresh $30.1B on top of the $19.4B already doled out. Those sums will then convert into the fore mentioned 60% stake. The governments of Canada and Ontario are also pitching in another $9.5 billion or so.

In its bankruptcy filing, GM listed $172.8 billion worth of debts (makes you whistle through your teeth, don't it?) and more than 100,000 creditors. The fallen icon will be kicked out of the Dow next week.

So will the new Government Motors be a success - a leaner, meaner, more responsive car company as Washington hopes? Will the new GM be able to move with "pure, unadulterated speed" as interim CEO Fritz Henderson suggests?

Don't hold your breath.

As Einstein more or less opined, one cannot solve a problem with the same consciousness that created it. Unfortunately, since GM has been sprawled face down in the bureaucratic ditch for decades now, changing the company's political ownership status from "unofficial" to "official" is not likely to have much effect.

Real, honest-to-God businesses are beholden to profit-seeking ownership interests, not largesse-seeking ownership interests. That's why it is such a bad deal letting the government own much of anything. As soon as an asset or a resource becomes public property, it instantly becomes fair game for all manner of special interests and beady-eyed schemers to exploit.

In that light, the "new" GM is going to be "owned" by a bewildering array of special interests - from union members, to environmentalists, to protectionists, to countless local interests at the state and federal level in multiple jurisdictions (and not just in the U.S., but Canada to boot). How many of those new owners can we expect to be worried about actual profits, versus carving out the biggest slice of the pie they can get? Hmm...

Oh, and About That Marxism Charge...

So, are the Pravda cynics right? Is America descending into Marxism at breathtaking speed, with General Motors serving as "Exhibit A" for the prosecution's case?

As with all our most entertaining discussions, I'll let you be the jury on this one. But before you answer, quick - what's the most famous thing Karl Marx ever said?

For most of us, one of two phrases immediately comes to mind. First: "Workers of the world, unite!" And second: "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs."

The first of those statements - on workers uniting - is noble in its own way. Despite appearances to the contrary, your humble editor is not 100% anti-union. The drive for union representation certainly made sense in the early days of the industrial revolution, when children were put to work as labor slaves and workers were generally exploited within an inch of their lives.

The real trouble came later, when the tables turned so thoroughly that the exploited became the exploiters. Union power overstepping its bounds, i.e. "Workers Unite!" taken too far, is one of the main threads of the GM story for the second half of the 20th century. Do some unions exist for good reason and advance their causes justly, even today? Of course. At the same time, have the unions - particularly the auto unions - covered themselves in glory these past fifty years? I don't think so.

The second statement - "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" - is far more frightening than noble. You can't have a system that allocates the "from" and the "to" without putting a small circle of men (or women) in power... and to really do it right they need absolute power. Via Washington's Byzantine labyrinth of smoke and mirrors, where much of the real power is wielded out of sight and behind closed doors, some would argue we are headed in that direction already.

Others would argue that Marxism is the "harder" form of socialism, in which participation goes from small-scale and voluntary to large-scale and coerced - and further protest that we are nowhere near that, as both the media and the public at large are in favor of Washington's latest moves. While distasteful in the extreme, these devil's advocates might say, the GM saga is necessary for America's healing.

What say ye? Is such talk overblown, or is there real reason to fear the direction in which General Motors (and America) is headed?

Balance Your Life - Make Changes To Balance Your Life Now And Later

Take Action Daily. Taking positive action can begin with a simple meditation or prayer for guidance. Make a list of the actions that you would like to accomplish the night before and allow your subconscious to work on it and assist you in preparing for action. Feed your physical body next by having a balanced breakfast that include protein, fruit and a warm drink to get the circulation going. Some doctors suggest adding ginger, cinnamon and honey may contribute to balance in the body.

Plan Your Day. Take the to-do-list and review it to prioritize the items and see if there is the need to change the order of work. Begin with the urgent or the easiest to complete and continue to work on the items until they are completed. If some items cannot be done because of obstacles that come in play, transfer them to the next day`s list. Some actions can only be completed in part or may not be necessary. Since these changes are to balance your life, look for the happy medium and do not become upset.

Create motivation. How do you really feel about doing a particular item? Will it contribute to the happiness in your life? In order to succeed you must be motivated. What are the pitfalls preventing you from achieving this objective? Often, you may believe that you should be carrying out a particular task because it may influence how someone thinks or feels about you but you really would prefer not to do it. Visualize the end result and compare the change in your life after the completion of this task. If the result is positive the motivation should be there, if there is nothing to be gained, think some more.

Avoid negativity. You may find that when you absorb negative facts through gossip provided to you by the media or friends, it is difficult to keep them to yourself. You will waste lots of time passing them on to others and checking to verify their origin and truth. Limit the amount of time spent receiving and passing on negative suggestions by giving a positive spin to each negative fact you receive. Friends and family will reduce the incidents of sending you negative information when you do this. You will want to check how this affects the balance in your life as you may lose friends or contact with relatives who enjoy passing on negative titbits.

Be Yourself. The only person you can control is you. You cannot control your adult children, husband, brothers or sisters, friends or other family members so be yourself. Many of you spend days or hours trying to influence the lives of others to achieve what you would like them to achieve but ultimately they will do what they want to do. Balance your life by doing the things that may you feel better and that allow you to influence society as a whole rather than focusing on a few individuals. Be willing to assist when asked by loved ones but let them chose their own paths. Balance your own life, use meditation, motivation, visualization and any other positive method available to you.
